Feds Asked Banks to Search Private Transactions for Terms Like ‘MAGA,’ ‘Trump’ After Jan. 6

FinCEN, the U.S. Treasury Department’s financial crime-fighting unit, is being accused of urging banks to comb through the private transactions of customers using terms like “MAGA” and “Trump” following events on Jan. 6, 2021 at the U.S. Capitol.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) leveled the accusation in a letter to former FinCEN director Noah Bishoff, in what the lawmaker described as “pervasive financial surveillance” carried out at the request of law enforcement that raises doubts about Treasury’s “respect for fundamental civil liberties.”

DOJ Confirms: Hunter Biden Laptop Was Real This Whole Time

New filings in the ongoing case against President Joe Biden’s embattled son confirm that the laptop tied to Hunter Biden was, in fact, his — and that the Justice Department knew it. New York Post reporter Miranda Devine — who has been working on the Hunter Biden story since the very beginning — laid out some of the new details in a thread posted to X.

She noted that in addition to the Bidens and the Justice Department being fully aware that the laptop was Hunter’s, they had even been able to match the contents discovered on the laptop to content stored on the cloud under his account.

Trump Faces More Challenging Test in N.H. After Blowout Iowa Win

Donald Trump's commanding victory in Iowa underscores his enduring appeal to a wide swath of Republican voters, and his campaign's sophisticated, data-driven ground game. But the next nominating contest in New Hampshire will test whether he can replicate that success in a less conservative state.

While Trump remains the prohibitive favorite to secure the Republican Party's presidential nomination, he needs a convincing win in New Hampshire to ensure his surviving rivals have little to no path left to outmaneuver him.

He can then turn his attention to his Democratic opponent in the Nov. 5 election, President Joe Biden, earlier than usual in the primary calendar.

US Military Intercepts Houthi Missile Targeting USS Laboon Warship

Yemen-based Houthis fired an anti-ship cruise missile toward a U.S. Navy warship on Jan. 14, U.S. military officials have confirmed.

The Houthis fired a missile at the USS Laboon at about 4:35 p.m. local time in the southern Red Sea, according to a statement from the Central Command (CENTCOM), which oversees U.S. military forces in the Middle East.

The missile was shot down by U.S. fighter aircraft, and no injuries were reported.

It wasn’t clear whether the United States would retaliate for the latest attacks, although President Joe Biden has said that he “will not hesitate to direct further measures to protect our people and the free flow of international commerce as necessary.”

ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR

Anti-Israel demonstrators gathered at the Montreal home of Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly on Jan. 13 over Canada’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war.

The protest outside Ms. Joly’s home came just one day after she issued a government statement saying that Ottawa’s “unwavering support for international law” does not mean it accepts “the premise of the case brought by South Africa,” which accuses Israel of genocide before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

Approximately three-dozen protesters showed up at Ms. Joly’s home the morning of Jan. 13 shouting pro-Palestinian slogans and accusing her of complicity in the alleged “genocide.”

The protestors set up a Concordia Student Union tent, held signs that said “Mourn the dead, fight like hell for the living,” and used a loudspeaker to make speeches and sing.

Iowa Caucus Tonight: Ultimate Guide on the Ins and Outs

The nation is watching the Iowa Caucuses as they will set the tone Monday night for the Republican presidential nominating process, and while the Iowa process may seem complicated at first glance, it is rather straightforward.

For starters, Iowa Republicans must fulfill two requirements if they wish to attend their precinct’s caucus: they must be a legal Iowa resident and a registered Republican, the Republcian Party of Iowa notes.
